Challenge:

The final two weeks were focused on creating boundary objects for another assigned location and to an audience of our choosing. This was an individual brief where we were encouraged to include an element of storytelling within our final design outcomes.

Response:

The location I was given was Heaton, an area that had a fifty-fifty balance of students to general residents with families living in the area. Throughout my research I found that there was a noticeable amount of graffiti in Heaton and a fair amount of small businesses on Chillingham road that students termed as ‘trendy’ on Instagram. The perception of graffiti was that it makes areas look ‘rough’ and attracts negative attention. However, my Instagram research was telling me otherwise in that graffiti was attracting an audience. For my, boundary object I wanted to test this theory and created ‘The Heaton Revamp’ festival whereby anyone can create graffiti on the local businesses on Chillingham road through the Instagram filter app. The most liked and used filters could then be commissioned by the local business if they also liked the design.
