Challenge:
The aim of this brief was to create design artifacts that act as a boundary object between selected pairs. The object is supposed to represent the connection of mutual interests and support in the development of a common visual language within the group. Each person was assigned two partners, with whom they had to design and produce an outcome based on a chosen theme.
Response:
The second collaborative project with William Morris focused on the subject of tattoos.
Tattoo art and culture has an extensive history, cultural impact, and diversity. We discussed what tattoos mean to us as individuals and how we could combine our specific interests within this area into a collaborative outcome. The final theme which we decided to focus on was animal tattoos and their meanings in different countries/cultures. In order to create a boundary object between our backgrounds, we chose three animals that were native to our places of birth. Creating the designs in different styles allowed us to convey the aesthetic, whilst also embedding the meaning through the text displayed on the back of each tattoo card. The final outcome consisted of 6 animal tattoo packs, with three designs per animal.
