This project explored how interdisciplinary research methods can inform design and battle inequalities related to cultural literacy issues. As a result, I created a Context magazine. In collaboration with a writer – MA English Literature student Niamh Sewell – we explored the relationship between design and written text and created a prototype issue.
The goal of my project is to observe how the use of interdisciplinary research methods in design practice can effectively help tackle the issues of inequalities related to cultural capital. I designed a magazine that helps to convey culturally relevant information from the chosen books, and by collaborating with the writer I explored the relationship between design and literature.
From the editor’s letter:
Welcome to the first issue of Context, where we will attempt to provide a source of literary knowledge. It’s a joyous moment for us to introduce you to a magazine that celebrates the sheer power of words, shared themes, and decoding of the culture
In a world that’s more connected than ever before, it’s easy to overlook the treasures hidden within the corners of our diverse globe. That’s where ‘Context’ steps in – as your cultural compass, guiding you through a myriad of narratives that shape our world. We’re not just a magazine; we’re your trusted companion on a quest to discover, learn, and engage with the magnificence of human expression.
What sets ‘Context’ apart is our commitment to making literary content more accessible. We understand that time is precious, and while immersing oneself in volumes of literature is a delight, it’s not always feasible. This is where our magazine becomes your shortcut to knowledge. With each issue, we handpick authors, themes and books that are worth knowing. You’ll learn about the beauty of cultures and their nuances without having to devour every book – although, we do encourage you to do that too if you’re so inclined.
