The Challenge:
This final major project explores the subject of food waste and service design for food banks. The project tackles the issue of how can the new Choice Store provide food bank users with a ‘normal’ retail experience that aligns with that of a supermarket? It further showcases that whilst Supermarkets are creating mass amounts of food waste, food banks have to compete to get food donations from them.
Response:
In response to this brief, I collaborated with the East End Women food bank, as they wanted to turn their service into a ‘normal’ corner shop/small supermarket. The main challenge was to give service users a sense of pride rather than shame when coming to use the new ‘Choice Store’. By co-designing with the East End Women, I was able to understand their target audience fully and developed both a physical and digital experience that felt similar to that of a ‘normal’ shop. The new app motivated users to visit the shop, volunteer and attend events to gain more points to align with their new physical members’ points card and other traditional supermarket materials were developed so that no one felt digitally isolated.
