Challenge: Use the starting point of the “sustainable city” to build a data-informed visualisation based on the city of Newcastle, which communicates a new perspective of the city from an environmental standpoint.
Response: Noise Pollution Data Visualisation
For this brief, my partner (Ramon) and I chose the theme of “Noise Pollution in Newcastle”. We specifically wanted to answer the major questions of “How Noisy is Newcastle?” and “How best can we use visual data materials to communicate the extent of this noise pollution (if present)?”. We began conducting our research based on these two major questions we sought to answer.
Ramon and I approached our deliverable from a campaign perspective. As such, in order to successfully create a compelling campaign, we chose to build our theme on a specific tagline “If Only Your Ears could Speak”. We thought this would be a thought-provoking metaphor to catch our audience’s attention. We also decided to execute our idea by creating a two-part campaign that would infuse infographics and a noise-tracking integration feature (for the Apple Health App).
My part of the project included designing the noise-tracking integration aspect. Hence, I designed a noise pollution feature that will help track noise in the environment and also monitor personal noise contribution.
