Challenge:
For this brief, we were told that a dwarf-planet called Harmonia had been discovered, capable of sustaining human life. Although the air was breathable, the living conditions were more extreme than on Earth. We were tasked to design a product, service or system that would contribute to the mission’s success. We would also need to design an advertisement for a design officer that would attend the mission.
Response:
For this brief, I created a series of weather sensors that would form a perimeter around the primary settlement on Harmonia. The sensors are connected in a system and monitored by a central computer that would be used by the design officer. The sensors are used to detect incoming extreme conditions and warn the residents of Harmonia before the conditions arrive. I designed a screen to attach to the sensors and designed its interface. The interface would contain everything needed whilst at a sensor. A maintenance page would show the condition of the sensor and allow the top to be lowered for repairs. A readings page would show climate data that would be used to complete one of the mission objectives. A help page and communications page would assist residents at the sensors with any queries, allowing them to read up on issues or call someone like the design officer for support. I also designed an advert that would target the kind of person I would like as a design officer, overseeing the entire mission.
